Many narrow gauge railways were built to serve the slate industry, working through slate mines and quarries to aid workers in moving slate around the site during the extraction and finishing processes and then, once ready for sale, onwards to transhipment yards. Given the abundance of slate in these locations, the material was used to build much of the infrastructure needed to operate the railways, to the extent that even footbridges were built from slate to provide people with a safe route of passage over the line, particularly when the railway passed through public land on its route to a port or similar transhipment location.
