German Bismarck-class battleship of World War II, commissioned in February 1941 and named after Grand Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz. It was the sister ship of Bismarck and, after wartime modifications, became the heaviest battleship ever built by a European navy.
Laid down 2/11/1936, Wilhelmshaven.
Commissioned 25/2/1941.
Main armament eight 38 cm (15-inch) guns in four twin turrets.
Sunk on 12/11/1944 near Tromsø, Norway, by RAF Lancaster bombers using 12,000 lb “Tallboy” bombs.
