US Army M4A1(76)W Sherman Medium Tank.
During World War II, the U.S. M4 Sherman series of medium tanks developed along two main design lines: differing powerplants and hull construction, later also distinguished by main gun calibres. The M4A1 variant featured a cast, rounded hull and was powered by a Continental R975 air-cooled radial gasoline engine. When the Sherman series was upgraded with the 76mm M1 main gun, the M4A1(76)W became the first variant to enter production with the improved armament. This version combined the M4A1’s cast hull with the T23 turret, enlarged front crew hatches, and a water-jacketed ammunition storage system for improved protection, marking a clear evolution from earlier M4A1 models. Additional refinements appeared on later production vehicles, leading to further detail differences over time.
