German Army Faun Panzer Transporter.
The origins of this heavy tank transporter go back to 1965, when West Germany and the United States launched a joint project to create a Heavy Equipment Transporter (HET) for the new MBT-70 main battle tank. Chrysler was the U.S. contractor for the tractor, with Faun of West Germany building the German version, while Krupp developed the trailer. When the MBT-70 program was cancelled in 1970, the HET was abandoned in America, but West Germany pressed ahead and produced the SLT-50-2 tractor, better known as the ‘Elefant’. A total of 328 were delivered by 1980, capable of moving Leopard tanks and other armoured vehicles.
To meet the increasing weight of modern armour, Faun later introduced the improved SLT-56 ‘Franziska’ tractor, paired with the Kässbohrer SaAnh 56t semi-trailer. Entering service in the 1980s, this combination offered greater payload capacity, stronger performance, and ensured the Bundeswehr could move Leopard 2s and other heavy equipment across Europe with reliability. The SLT-56 remains one of the most distinctive tank transporters of the Cold War era.
