During World War II, The Sullivans served extensively in the Pacific, providing anti-aircraft protection for carrier task forces, conducting shore bombardments, rescuing downed airmen, and engaging Japanese aircraft. The ship participated in operations including Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

The destroyer earned 9 Battle Stars for World War II service and 2 Battle Stars for Korean War service.
After World War II, the ship was reactivated for the Korean War and later served with the US Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean before being decommissioned in 1965.

USS The Sullivans is preserved as a museum ship at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park in Buffalo, New York. The vessel was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. In April 2022, the ship suffered a serious hull breach and partially sank at her berth, but preservation efforts successfully stabilised and repaired the vessel, allowing it to reopen to visitors.
