US Army M1088 FMTV Tractor with AN/TPY-2 X Band Radar Trailer.
The Oshkosh M1088 5-ton Tractor is a variant of the Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) series used by the US Army. Designed for line-haul transport duties, it is used to tow semi-trailers carrying a wide range of equipment, including vehicles, engineering equipment, and missile system components. Vehicles can also be fitted with a self-recovery winch to support recovery and retrieval operations. The M1088 is equipped with an LTAS (Long-Term Armour Strategy) compliant cab. The AN/TPY-2 is a transportable X-band, phased-array radar developed for ballistic missile defence. The system can operate in two configurations: Terminal Mode and Forward-Based Mode.
In Terminal Mode, the radar operates as the primary sensor of the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defence) system. It detects and tracks ballistic missile targets during the latter stages of flight, providing tracking data to support engagement and interception.
In Forward-Based Mode, the radar is positioned closer to potential launch areas to detect and track ballistic missiles during their boost and early midcourse phases. Information collected by the radar is passed to the wider missile defence network, providing early warning and tracking data to support missile defence operations.
