US Army AH-1W Super Cobra Attack Helicopter (Turned Exhaust).
The AH-1W Super Cobra is often equipped with a distinctive Turned Exhaust System (TES), designed to reduce the helicopter's infrared signature and improve survivability in combat zones. The system redirects hot engine exhaust gases upward and outward, mixing them with cooler ambient air to minimise the heat signature detectable by infrared-guided missiles.
This defensive modification, sometimes referred to as a turned-down exhaust or infrared suppressor, is visually identifiable by the angled exhaust outlets positioned at the rear of the engine housing. Widely used on Super Cobras deployed in high-threat environments, the turned exhaust offers a vital passive countermeasure against heat-seeking weapons, enhancing the aircraft's effectiveness in close air support and anti-armour roles.
