US Army ACH-47A Chinook Armoured Helicopter Gunship.
The ACH-47A Chinook "Guns-A-Go-Go" gunship carried a crew of eight and was heavily armed for its role in combat support. Its arsenal included up to five machine guns, either M2 .50 cal or M60D 7.62 mm, mounted at the side windows and rear ramp. In addition, it could be equipped with two fixed M24A1 20 mm cannon, two M18/M18A1 pod-mounted 7.62 mm miniguns or two 19-tube 2.75-inch rocket launchers, along with a chin-mounted 40 mm automatic grenade launcher on the M5 armament subsystem. The aircraft also featured additional armour protection for the crew and key components.
During the Vietnam War, three ACH-47A Chinooks – nicknamed “Easy Money”, “Stump Jumper”, and “Birth Control” – were deployed to Vietnam for a six-month operational trial. A fourth aircraft, “Cost of Living”, remained in the United States for flight testing as the prototype. Although their evaluation was considered a success, with every assigned target destroyed, only one aircraft survived the harsh conditions of combat.
