Project 658M, also known as Hotel II-class, was a Soviet submarine upgrade program for the original Project 658 (Hotel-class) ballistic missile submarines. Launched in the early 1960s, Project 658M retrofitted these submarines with the more advanced R-21 (SS-N-5) ballistic missiles, which could be launched while submerged — an improvement over the earlier missiles that required surface launches
