British Army Chieftain Mk 10 Main Battle Tank.
By the end of the 1970s, the Chieftain remained the British Army’s principal main battle tank. As Chieftain was approaching the later stages of its service life, attention turned to extending the viability of an established design rather than replacing it outright. Although successive improvements had enhanced the tank’s fire‑control equipment, communications, and mechanical reliability since its introduction in 1966, advances in anti‑tank weapon performance during the Cold War period reduced the margin of protection built into the original vehicle.
To address this, an upgrade was developed to improve turret protection against modern tank fire and anti‑tank weapons. The modification, designated Stillbrew, added substantial external armour to the forward face of the turret and reinforced critical structural regions around the crew and gun mount, improving resistance to contemporary threats. The addition resulted in a noticeable change to the Chieftain’s appearance, which were redesignated Chieftain Mk 10. Stillbrew was applied widely across the British Army Chieftain fleet and included the Berlin Brigade. Assigned to a uniquely exposed and politically sensitive role, these tanks became well known for their distinctive urban camouflage schemes and for representing the continued presence of British armoured forces in a divided Berlin until the end of the Cold War.
