The diminutive Baguley-Drewry marks Bachmann’s first foray into the world of narrow gauge diesels for the Bachmann Narrow Gauge OO9 scale range. These 70 horsepower machines were originally built for use at Royal Naval Armament Depots (RNAD) which employed narrow gauge networks to move armaments between storage locations and transhipment sites. The perfect complement to the Bachmann Narrow Gauge RNAD Wagons, these diesel locomotives pack a lot into a small space with a high proportion of diecast parts to provide the 4-wheel locomotives with a running performance befitting the prototype. Several details are fitted separately, including the air filter mounted on top of the bonnet, headlights (non-functional) at the front and rear of the cab, windscreen wipers and, inside the cab, chairs and controls are modelled too.

The coreless motor, which is fitted with a flywheel, provides drive to both axles – each of which run in separate metal bearings. Electrical pick-up comes from all wheels whilst the couplings are mounted into NEM coupling pockets – these can be removed and the bufferbeams swapped out for fully detailed alternatives that do not feature the cut-outs required for the OO9 coupling.

All of this detail is brought to life by the attractive crimson livery applied to this example, complete with intricate lining. Window frames are picked out in silver and the cab interior is decorated, whilst the maker’s name is replicated on the front of the locomotive.

BAGULEY-DREWRY 70HP DIESEL HISTORY

The seventy horsepower, 4 wheel diesel-hydraulic locomotives were built by Baguley-Drewry in Burton Upon Trent at the start of the 1980s and were some of the final locomotives to be outshopped by the company which closed its doors in 1984. Ordered by the Ministry of Defence for use in the Royal Navy Armaments Depots in Wales at Milford Haven and Trecwn, the fleet was later transferred to Dean Hill in Wiltshire which remained operational until 2004. In 2009, the remaining railway assets were sold off giving the Baguley-Drewrys a second life in preservation or at private railways. Originally built to a gauge of 2ft. 6in., some has since been re-gauged to suit the varying gauges used by the narrow gauge railways that they now call home.
