Sand has long been highly important in the operation of railway locomotives and remains so today, aiding traction in slippery conditions when it is added to the rail head to increase friction between the metal rail and wheelsets. Dispensed from the sand boxes fitted to steam, diesel and electric locomotives and also multiple units, larger sheds and depots would often have a sanding plant which used a hopper to quickly fill the sandboxes ready for the locomotive or unit to undertake its next duties.
