Competing as A da Silva in the 1981 karting and Formula Ford 1600 season, the 22-year-old Ayrton took his mother's maiden name Senna for the rest of his career, first competing as Ayrton Senna in the Formula Ford 2000 at Brands Hatch on March 7, 1982.
