Steam locomotives can only produce steam if they have water, so the railway network was awash with water towers, tanks and cranes during the steam age. Whilst many locomotives would take water on shed or whilst stabled between duties, some stations boasted Water Cranes mounted at the ends of platforms allowing locomotives to top up during station stops with little or no disruption to services.
