NATO Air Combat Manoeuvring Instrumentation & AIM-9L/M Missiles.

The AIM-9 Sidewinder is a short-range, heat-seeking air-to-air missile widely used by NATO and allied air forces. Developed by the United States in the 1950s, the missile has undergone numerous upgrades, with the L and M variants representing significant improvements in performance.

• AIM-9L (introduced late 1970s) was the first all-aspect Sidewinder, capable of engaging targets from any direction. It featured improved seekers and warhead effectiveness.
• AIM-9M followed in the 1980s with enhanced counter-countermeasures, better reliability, and reduced-smoke motor, making it harder to detect when launched.

Both versions were widely deployed, notably in conflicts such as the Falklands War, Gulf War, and beyond. While newer versions of the AIM-9 Sidewinder – like the AIM-9X – have largely replaced older variants, the AIM-9L and M still see some operational use and remain in limited service or reserve roles in some air forces today.
